Curiosity is just the first step toward a series of more advanced NASA missions in the immediate future that will aim for direct signs of life. ExoMars, the European Space Agency’s (ESA) rover on Mars, will study organics specifically to decide how they’re made, and whether they choose a “left-hand” or “right-hand” arrangement identical to how life occurs on Earth.

And NASA’s Mars rover will not only scan for evidence of life on the surface but also store the most interesting rock samples for potential distribution to Earth.
