In 1962, the HC-1B was redesignated CH-47A under the United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system of 1962.

The Chinook has several means for loading a variety of cargo, including multiple doors across the fuselage, a wide loading ramp located at the rear of the fuselage, and a total of three external ventral cargo hooks for carrying the load below. Capable of achieving a top speed of 170 knots (200 mph; 310 km/h), following its introduction into service in 1962, it was far faster than contemporary 1960s utility and attack helicopters, and is still one of the fastest helicopters in the world. .
